Speaker: Ananya Mahalingam-Dhingra, DVM, Resident, Large Animal Internal Medicine
This session will focus on a recent study examining the effect of long-distance transport on the equine respiratory microbiome. It will include a review of shipping fever, recent advances into the respiratory microbiome in multiple species, and consequent design and results of this study.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Mahalingam-Dhingra is currently a resident in large animal internal medicine as well as a PhD candidate in biomedical sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at Williams College and went on to veterinary school at Tufts University. There she completed research on equine asthma under Drs. Mazan and Bedenice, both of which sparked her initial interest in large animal internal medicine. She also obtained a certificate in International Veterinary Medicine and had the opportunity to help provide veterinary care to working equids in Fes, Morocco in her final year at Tufts. After veterinary school, she completed a rotating internship at the Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in Ringoes, New Jersey, where her love of internal medicine, particularly challenging respiratory and neonatology cases, continued to grow. She was delighted to have the opportunity to return to Tufts for an internal medicine residency and is now in her final year of residency training. She is concurrently completing a PhD in biomedical sciences, with a focus on the equine gastrointestinal microbiome.
