Description of Program:

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at Texas A&M University is offering two positions for residents in Emergency and Critical Care medicine (ECC). This is a three-year standard track residency that is currently offered independently of the VIRMP. The program is directly supported by one ACVECC diplomate and a board eligible criticalist. This residency combines a large caseload and a world-class hospital that recruits the renowned staff in all of the other specialties to assist in training the residents. Completion of the program will provide the resident with the opportunity to obtain the necessary credentials for taking the ACVECC board certification examination. A competitive internship or equivalent experience is required for consideration. Acceptance into the second and third years of the program will be dependent upon successful completion of the previous year's program, as assessed by regular evaluations during and at the end of each year.

The goal of this program is to nurture the development of forward and critically thinking specialists in emergency and critical care medicine. This development includes fostering the ability to communicate with colleagues about the complicated physiology and pathophysiology of critical care. The preparation of a first authored paper and its submission for publication is a requirement for completion of the program. The publication must be acceptable to the critical care faculty members and should be in a journal considered acceptable by the Credentials Committee of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. The design, implementation and documentation of a research project and its presentation at a national meeting is encouraged.

Emphasis is on the management of a heavy emergency caseload, with at least 30% of time spent as part of the team overseeing the critical care unit. The critical care resident is often responsible for assisting with cases requiring ventilation or having special intensive care requirements such as peritoneal dialysis or post-arrest and resuscitation management. Board-certified faculty members in direct support of the program include 8 internists, 3 cardiologists, 2 oncologists, 1 neurologist/neurosurgeon, 1 ophthalmologist, 5 anesthesiologists, 4 radiologists, 1 nutritionist, 5 surgeons, and 1 dermatologist.

The residents are regularly responsible for the supervision and teaching of students and interns during cageside rounds and emergency receiving shifts. Residents present lectures to the college, interns and the nursing staff in their respective lecture series. The emergency critical care service will hold weekly didactic rounds which cover physiology and pathophysiology topics, as well as review of current literature and morbidity and mortality rounds. These sessions are geared toward board review. Other specialty services and the house officers in the hospital also have regular didactic sessions. The residents are encouraged to join those sessions. The second- and third-year residents are permitted increased flexibility in scheduling to concentrate their efforts in an area or areas in which they have a special interest.

State-of-the-art diagnostic techniques including color-flow Doppler ultrasonography, nuclear imaging, CT, MRI, and video endoscopy are available. Strong clinical support services including nuclear medicine, clinical pathology, radiation therapy, clinical microbiology, and clinical nutrition promote optimal patient management and clinical investigation.
Our blood bank is managed by dedicated technicians. We routinely auto-transfuse using cell saver technology and use a heart lung machine that is operated by trained perfusionists. Our large critical care unit is staffed 24-hours a day and an adjacent step down ward houses the more stable patients.

To be licensed to practice in Texas, an applicant must have graduated from an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine OR have the PAVE or ECFVG certificate and pass a jurisprudence examination (taken at orientation). Approval of the application for license to practice veterinary medicine in Texas is under the auspices of the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The candidate must apply in a proper and timely manner to sit for examination for license and be approved by the TSBVME. Employment is contingent on your ability to provide employment eligibility documentation required by federal employment and/or immigration laws.

Salaries are determined annually by the Head of the Department. They are standard for all residents in the Department, and currently salaries increase with each year of service. Residents will be offered a benefit package that includes a group insurance plan with group health, life, dependent life, disability income, and accidental death and dismemberment policies available. The costs of benefit programs are shared by the employee and Texas A&M University. The employee's costs for benefits vary with the number and types of benefit programs selected.
